HIGHLIGHTS United Quest Ruins Home Team's Tournament Debut
Johnson City - Game 2 - Saturday, April 20, 2002 - 12:15 PM After the girls of United Quest dominated their morning match opponents, they arrived for their afternoon game full of confidence and energy. If there were any doubts that the '88 Whites could equal their level of play from earlier in the day, they were short-lived. The hometown Johnson City 88 Lady Falcons could not have expected the speed of play they encountered when the Quest girls started the game in high gear and just kept getting faster. It took just a few minutes for United to tally their first goal, and they would not be able to stop until another nine shots had crossed the goal line. Unfortunately for Johnson City, the United defense was in a very stingy mood and the Lady Falcons wouldn't find the net all game. Forward Amanda Masters got things going when she poked one in from the right side, and she followed her first goal with another nice strike just a couple of minutes later. Before the hometown team could get their legs under them, the ball was in their penalty area again and center midfielder Kylie Foley quickly netted United's third goal. Each Johnson City kickoff seemed to result in the same quick change of possession that in turn led to a United counterattack. Not content with two goals, Amanda Masters took a nice pass, feigned a shot, and stutter-stepped past a flatfooted defender to tally her third of the match. Her scoring was done for the day, but the rest of the team was anxious to get into the act. Sierra Green had been active in both games causing trouble for both of the opposing teams. Her attacks helped keep the pressure on the Lady Falcons, and forward Meagan Dilbeck took advantage of a harried defender to turn on goal and beat a slightly demoralized keeper to run the score to 5-0. After proving her defensive mettle through a match and a third, midfielder Heather Dougherty pushed forward on yet another Quest surge and notched her first goal of the season to push the tally to 6-0. The Lady Falcons were clearly overmatched and it didn't take long for Kylie Foley to bag her second goal of the game. With the match well in hand at 7-0, Coach Anne Bristol urged her players to concentrate on passing and possession as she mixed up the regular lineups in favor of learning situations. Three more goals would come in the second half, and it was forward Jasmine Noel who made a nice play to push the score to 8-0. As had been the case in game one, sweeper Alena Reich kept the Quest defense well organized throughout the match. Her flanking defenders, including the feisty Estela Negron-Flores, helped keep the ball away from their goal and a relatively untested Ana Trujillo in goal. Stopper Carolyn Craddock continued the trend she set in game one by moving the ball confidently out of the defensive third and up to her midfielders and forwards with skill. Kim Shriver saw action at both forward and defender and performed strongly during the Johnson City team's best sequences to help turn away Lady Falcon attacks. Midfielder Caroline Poirier also continued her impressive play and set a tone of controlled confidence for the entire team. The always hard-working Ali Schultz created one of her patented chances on goal midway through the second half and slotted a nice shot into the back of the net to make the score 9-0. The game circumstances allowed coach Bristol to move her number one keeper out of goal to get some time on the field. Keepers love time on the field and Ana Trujillo took her chance at forward to dribble the entire offensive half of the field and push a shot past her shocked counterpart to tally the final goal of the match. Winning 10-0, United Quest had completely dominated a second consecutive match on their fast march to the title. And they were just getting started.
