HIGHLIGHTS United Fails to Finish-off Cannon Gold
April 27th The Girls of United Quest wanted to follow-up their recent tournament triumph with a successful defense of their home turf. The Coweta County Cannon Gold squad had other ideas. United played well throughout the match, creating chances off of clever passes and well-placed crosses, but the finishing touch was once again eluding them at the critical moments. After dominating play on the field, the Quest girls gave up one of the wackiest goals of the year right in front of their own goal after some miscommunication between defenders and the keeper. A high bouncing ball essentially became an "own goal" after both players failed to clear the ball and then touched it into the United goal. Cannon Gold was up 1-0 without really taking a shot. United continued to dominate play from end to end, and finally took advantage of some sloppy defending in the second half by the Coweta County back three defenders. Forward Meagan Dilbeck stepped in and managed to head in a blooping goal in the midst of the confusion in front of the visitors' goal. The match was tied 1-1 with plenty of time to create a chance for a winning goal. Creating turned out to be pretty easy for Quest, but finding the net remained a difficulty. United players sent in cross after cross, took shot after shot, and crashed the goal for loose balls. It all went for naught as the final whistle blew with not one more United shot having found the net. Coach Anne Bristol had her kids doing everything right, but they just couldn't buy a goal when they most needed one. The girls left the pitch disappointed and wishing they had saved one or two of the twenty-three goals they had scored in the tournament last weekend for this match. With four matches left in the season, the girls have some mounting pressure to get a couple of wins under their collective belts to avoid a losing season.
