United Quest Chases Blue Stars Away

March 24, 2002

The Atlanta Youth Soccer Association Blue Stars visited the United Quest '88 Whites on Sunday, March 24th and left wishing they'd just stayed at home. The first half was a sloppy affair that saw neither team develop much consistency of play. The ball spent an inordinate amount of time up off the turf, as both teams seemed afflicted with bad first touches and an exaggerated affection for aimless heading. The Quest girls were able to keep the ball away from their goal for most of the half, but couldn't find the combinations for finishing shots in their opponents' defensive third. Since the ball was changing possession with regularity, United's chances were mostly coming off of broken passing sequences and awkward clearances by the Blue Stars' defenders. Midfielder Kylie Foley decided to try her foot for a long shot on goal after one such haphazard sequence, and the resulting strike baffled the AYSA keeper to put United up 1-0. That shot seemed to calm down the Quest midfield and there were several more attractive passing sequences that just failed to connect for the final thrust on goal before forward Alena Reich unloaded a nice long-range strike to push the score to 2-0. United keeper Ana Trujillo wasn't tested much, but she came up big on a breakaway making a sliding stop that stole a sure goal from a confident looking AYSA forward. When the dust settled, the ball was firmly in the Quest keeper's hands. The half ended at 2-0.

The second half saw the return of the sloppy look of the first half, but several great throw-ins by Estela Negron-Flores helped settle down the quest attack. On one sequence, Midfielder Ali Schultz took the ball away from the side touchline, turned upfield, and unleashed a well-directed shot that one of the Blue Star defenders accidentally deflected toward her own goal. Although the shot appeared to have already beaten the keeper, the slight redirection made the goal a certain outcome of the shot. United were up 3-0 and would coast for the rest of regulation time.

Playing minutes were a premium for some members of the squad and all of the players surely recognized that the coach was trying some new combinations. With solid play up top by Jasmine Noel, and with the controlled midfield play of Caroline Poirier, the team had a whole new look that had to have some of the players wondering about their usual roles. Several of the girls made strong cases for minutes in new positions and Coach Anne Bristol's new player combinations seemed to work well at times. United was able to string together some of their best passing sequences of the match well after the outcome was decided. Some late energy from the regular Quest front line did not affect the final score, but they seemed challenged by the good work of their teammates earlier in the match and stepped up their level of play. If the girls can tame their first touches and remember that they play better when passing the ball well, United should have a fine season. last week's highlightsnext week's highlights
